What is Augmented Reality (AR)
It is an enhanced version of the physical world which combines a view of the real world with computer-generated elements.
Is it the same as Virtual Reality
No. Virtual Reality (VR) places the user in a simulated programme so they can experience what it would be like to be in that environment e.g. designing a house.
How can you train people using AR
In the same way a trainer or facilitator would lead a classroom or online based training course, the trainer guides the trainees through a series of tasks to complete a learning session or module. The trainer can be situated anywhere in the world and both trainer and trainee just need an internet connection.
How does it work
Trainees wear a head mounted camera with a combined heads up display (HUD) which connects through a videoconference type application so that the trainer can see what the trainee sees and the trainee can see whatever the trainer sends them through the HUD. All hands-free.
Is it similar to online training or webinars
Yes and no. Yes because it works over the internet and no because the trainer or facilitator sees exactly what the trainees see and is on hand to support them with guidance on what they are doing physically in real time.
What type of training can be done using AR
AR is now used in medical training from MRI applications to performing highly delicate surgery in real time. Pilots flying F-35 fighter jets use AR displays to see a 360-degree view around their aircraft, thereby eliminating any blind spots.
There are so many potential applications and the one we are delivering right now - vehicle technical training - is for vehicle technicians needing to gain qualifications of demonstrable competency to service, diagnose and repair faults.
